Why can’t I message someone?

If you’re unable to start or continue a conversation, it’s usually due to privacy settings, safety rules, or membership and verification requirements.

Heads up: On Tangles, only verified users with an active membership can initiate new messages. Unverified or free-tier accounts may see profiles but can’t start chats.

Common reasons you can’t message

  • Not matched (if the user requires matches). Some members only accept messages from mutual matches.
  • You’re not verified. Photo/ID/phone verification is required to start chats.
  • Membership required. Starting new conversations is a paid feature; free users can’t initiate.
  • You’ve been blocked. If someone blocks you, messaging is disabled for both sides.
  • They’ve paused or limited messages. The other person may restrict who can contact them (e.g., “matches only”).
  • Age/location filters. You may fall outside of their selected preferences.
  • Daily message limit reached. You’ve hit your plan’s limit for first messages today.
  • Profile incomplete. Some features unlock only after you add photos/bio/basics.
  • Safety hold. Our systems may temporarily limit messaging for unusual activity.

What you can do

  • Complete verification in Settings → Verify.
  • Upgrade your plan in Settings → Membership to start new chats.
  • Finish your profile: add photos, bio, basics.
  • Send a like first; wait for a match if they only accept messages from matches.
  • Try again tomorrow if you’ve hit your message cap.
  • If you think there’s a mistake, contact support with screenshots.

Tip: Verifying your account and completing your profile often increases response rates.
