If something feels off, trust your instincts. This guide shows you how to recognize fake profiles and report them to our Safety team so we can act quickly.
Important: Never send money, gift cards, crypto, or personal verification codes to anyone you meet online.
Common signs of a fake or scam profile
Profile red flags
- Only 1–2 photos, or images that look like stock/model shots.
- Bio is vague, generic, or oddly formatted (copy-paste feel).
- Location inconsistencies or claims that change mid-chat.
Behavior red flags
- Quickly pushes you off the app (WhatsApp, Telegram, email).
- Asks for money, investment “opportunities,” or crypto wallets.
- Refuses video/voice calls, avoids meeting in public places.
- Sends links asking you to “verify” on third-party sites.
If they ask for money or codes: Stop replying, report them in-app, and block the profile.
How to report a profile on Tangles
- Open the person’s profile (or the chat with them).
- Tap the More menu (⋯) and choose Report.
- Select a reason (e.g., Scam or Fraud, Fake photos, Impersonation).
- Add any helpful details (screenshots, what was said, links they sent).
- Submit the report. You can also tap Block to stop contact immediately.
We review most reports within hours. Severe violations are prioritized.
What happens after you report?
- Our Safety systems flag the account for review (including device, network, and behavior patterns).
- If we confirm a violation, we remove content or ban the account. For borderline cases, we may limit features until identity is verified.
- Repeated or coordinated abuse leads to permanent device and network bans.
Your privacy: Reports are confidential. The person you report won’t see who reported them.
If you already sent money or personal info
- Bank/payment app: Contact your bank or the payment app immediately and file a fraud dispute.
- Gift cards: Contact the card issuer and report the code as stolen.
- Passwords shared? Change them everywhere they’re used and enable 2-factor authentication.
- Local law enforcement: Keep chat logs, usernames, dates, and transaction receipts. File a police report if money was lost or threats were made.
How to verify someone is real (safely)
- Suggest a quick video chat before meeting.
- Meet in a public place and tell a friend where you’re going.
- Keep conversations in-app until trust is established; avoid external links.
- Be cautious of overnight “love bombing,” pressure, or guilt tactics.
