What you can do with your phone number
- 🔐 Log in with phone (passwordless) using a 6-digit SMS code.
- ➕ Link a phone to your existing account for easier login and account recovery.
- 🔁 Change your linked phone at any time (we’ll re-verify the new number).
- 🗑️ Remove your phone from the account if you prefer not to keep it linked.
We never share your phone number publicly. See Privacy & security below.
How phone login works
- You enter your number in Log in or Phone Settings.
- We send a 6-digit code by SMS (one-time password).
- After you enter the 6-digit code, our system checks if it’s correct and not expired. If it is valid, you’re securely signed in and we set a protected session cookie.
- If you don’t yet have an account, you’ll be guided to create one — we’ll ask for your email and a username, send you a verification link, and once you confirm it, you can complete your new Tangles profile.
Why codes might fail
- Code expired (codes are short-lived).
- Too many attempts (rate limits protect accounts).
- Trial account restriction (Twilio trial requires verifying recipient numbers).
Tips for success
- Use full international format (E.164), e.g.
+15551234567. - Keep the page open; codes expire quickly.
- Request a new code if you switch apps for too long.
Link or change your phone number
Link a phone to an existing account
- Open Phone Settings.
- Enter your number (e.g.,
+15551234567) and tap Send Code. - Enter the 6-digit code from SMS and tap Verify.
After success you’ll see the number marked verified. You can now log in with this phone.
Change the linked phone
- In Phone Settings, choose Remove phone.
- Enter the new number and repeat the Send Code → Verify steps.
We don’t allow two accounts to share the same phone number. If a number is already linked elsewhere, you’ll see an error.
Remove your phone
Click Remove phone in Phone Settings. You can still log in with your other methods (email/password or social), but phone login will be disabled until you re-link.
Troubleshooting
- I didn’t get a code.
• Confirm format is full international (e.g.,+15551234567).
• Check coverage or Wi-Fi calling settings (some carriers may delay SMS).
• If you’re on our internal Twilio trial: the destination number must be added under Twilio Console → Phone Numbers → Verified Caller IDs trial only. - My code says “invalid” or “expired”.
• Codes are single-use and expire quickly—request a new one.
• Make sure you didn’t request multiple codes and enter an older one. - “This phone is already linked to another account.”
For safety, a number can only belong to one account. If you believe this is an error, contact support from the email on file. - Can I use a VoIP or landline?
SMS usually requires mobile numbers. Some VoIP providers work; landlines don’t receive SMS.
Privacy & security
- Your phone number is stored securely and never shown on your public profile.
- We use one-time codes (no passwords sent by SMS).
- Rate limiting and anti-abuse checks protect your account.
- You can unlink your phone at any time in settings.
